Ex-Polokwane defender Chembezi contemplates signing for Malawian club

Former Polokwane City defender Chembezi Denis has said he is contemplating signing for a local team back home in Malawi.

Denis said he was weighing options for a short-term contract with a local team while waiting for the next January transfer window.

“I will certainly sign a short-term contract with TNM Super League contract with an eye on the January transfer window for a move overseas,” he said.

The defender said this when FARPost asked him about his next destination following his exit from the Rise and Shine.

The 25-year-old left Polokwane while injured and reportedly decided against renewing his two-year contract.

FULLY RECOVERED

The former SureStream Academy player Denis said he had now fully recovered.

“It was a harm-string injury that was not as very serious as feared. I recovered months ago,” he said

The right-footed defender joined Polokwane two years ago from Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.

The centre-back has not kicked the ball since June this year when he suffered a harm-string injury in the Flames’ game away in Guinea.

Malawi lost the game 1-0 to a Naby Keita’s goal in the AFCON qualifying match.

RELIABLE FLAMES DEFENDER

The absence of Chembezi has given the Flames coach Maro Marinica headache with sweeper Lawrence Chaziya playing without a regular defensive partner.

Chembezi is a regular for the Flames and featured in all the group stage games at the delayed 2021 AFCON in Cameroon as they reached the round-of-16.

Malawi recovered from a 1-0 loss to Guinea to beat Zimbabwe 2-1, hold Senegal 0-0 and advance to the round-of-16 where they lost 2-1 to Morocco.

WANDERERS’ POSSIBLE RETURN

Denis fell short of stating his preferred destination but a return to Wanderers looks a possibility.

The Flames defender will have enough company in the TNM Super League of former DStv Premiership players.

The Malawi league has this season seen former Baroka FC Stars Robin Ngalande and Richard Mbulu signing for Wanderers and Mafco.
